To promote Khel India scheme, best participation and excellence in sports
The revised Ghela India Yojana was launched during the financial year 2017-18 with the objective of achieving the two objectives of people's participation and excellence in sports. Reformed Ghelo India's vision is to foster a sports culture in the country and achieve sports excellence. According to the revised plan, the mission is to promote sports for the holistic development of children and youth, community development, social development through its cross-cutting influence on the population of all races and all age groups. Economic opportunities related to integration, gender equality, healthy lifestyle, national pride and development of sports.











Sports talents identified under Lolo India will be given the option to join SAI National Sports Academy, State Sports Academy or a privately established sports academy. Grants will be provided to Sports Authority India, State Governments or private sector or public private partnership (PPP) mode for the establishment, operation and maintenance of sports academy in respect of identification, discipline of sports acade authority to facilitate and supplement long. Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Program (for 8 years). The best academies can be at the national, regional or state level, both public and private. The Academy will be identified for recurring and non-recurring, need-based support, by inviting proposals from appropriate institutions. A system for rating academics will be developed for the selection of suitable academics for support. At least the academy for para athletes will get support.






This information has been given in the written reply in the Lok Sabha today by the Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports (Independent Charge) Colonel Rajyavardhan Rathore (retd).

The eligibility criteria for Khelo India program are given below.


  • Candidates below the age of 17 years can participate in the Under-17 category.
  • Candidates below the age of 21 can participate in the Under-21 category.

The objectives of Khelo India

It will be a Central Sector Scheme (a scheme implemented by the machinery of the Central Government and 100% funded by the Central Government).
It is a Pan India Sports Scholarship Scheme which covers 1000 most deserving and talented athletes in the discipline of sports every year.
The selected athletes will get a scholarship of Rs 5 lakh for eight consecutive years.
It is an unprecedented plan, the first to be implemented to create a long-term development path for athletes.


To enable sportspersons to pursue both study and sport, the program aims to identify and promote the country's 20 universities as centers of sports diversity.
For game promotion, the latest user friendly technology will be used. Ex: Transmitting information for sports training through Geographic Information System (GIS), user-friendly website for indigenous sports, National Sports Talent Search Portal, and mobile applications to locate sports infrastructure.
To ensure maximum access to organized sports competitions, the program encourages schools and colleges to organize high-quality programs.



Creating an active population with a healthy lifestyle is also at the heart of the program. For this purpose, there is a plan for a National Physical Fitness Drive where children in the age group of 10-18 years will be screened for physical fitness. Next, activities will be organized to support their physical fitness.



The aim is to impact the entire sports ecosystem, including the sports economy, competition structure, talent identification, coaching and infrastructure.
The program plans to engage youth living in disadvantaged and disadvantaged areas in sports activities so that they will be given a key role in the nation building process and stay away from disruptive activities.
